Legolas - Quick Draw

The majority of the time, even my really loose drawings have basic figure stuff underneath. I like the idea of plain clothes Legolas for some reason. Really though, I just wanted to draw his fancy hair.

Sketches

Color Doodles

This one is less of a color doodle. Normally when I do "Asian inspired" things, it involves me hashing together a lot of things and getting kind of messy with crossover between various types of Buddhism and what people are wearing. Anyways, wanted to do something with green and pink.

 

First two doodles I did of this guy/lady/whatever. Japanese influenced I guess. For the most part.

Experimenting with color and movement. These drawings were all done in one of those paper back Moleskine's with a Staedtler marker.

 

Two newer ones, um Japanese influenced, and Korean, both with the lotus motif and Eight Fold on the right hand one. Yeahhh...Back to work~

Hana

Doodlewoodle from last night.
Hadn't done anything in colored pencil in a while, though I'm not sure where this one came from. This is nothing like the prismacolor ones that I'm used to. Dry and pastel-y. It's a Derwent Artists pencil. Uh. Yep.

This drawing was flipped, and it's weird because now I have the feeling that I'm typing wrong and keep trying to type in a way that's more backwards, probably should stop looking at it.

Progress on Ume Abroad

Been working on Ume Abroad, this bigger panel is costing me though, because I refuse to utilize my tiny awkward flickery light box, and choose to use this window. It's fine, until it gets dark out.

Going to finish inking it today though, then the panels get "normal" sized again for a while and I don't have to do larger things. A plus of this whole thing is that I'm pretty awful at doing the perspective on these types of buildings, so it's good for me.

Here's a progress update on the inking. It's slow going. I took a break with working on finishing the reopan print.

Still having some issues with the drawing of Senbei, I just...never like them when they're colored. I even referenced this one! Though maybe that's the issue. Maybe. Bleh. I have three more to do, but they're less Asian. So therefore less...fun. I'm also redrawing the third one. This though, is because I was drawing it at 2am last night and the pen sort of got away from me.

Here are the two that I still have to draw. No there is not THAT much of a height difference, maybe they're standing on something. The one of Pop is for the first section. Yep. These "sections" are getting weird though, they keep really varying in length. Man, I could never draw a comic that had to have floppy versions or anything. Yeesh.

Do these borders seem familiar? That's because they're business card sized! I need the shape for the comic, so that's what everyone gets. Also it's a plus because if I ever want to put them on cards I'm set.

Ume Abroad progress

I wrote this nice happy journal and then the internet ate it. So have a shorter less involved one. It's probably for the best anyways. This are header images for different sections of Ume Abroad. I figured because they happen to have Japanese names (even though none of them are) they'd start in Japan. The next one might be Europe. I really do want to hit the Euro, but maybe not Russia. Curse you fancy buildings.

The one of Senbei I gave up on because I don't like the original drawing so I'm starting over on it. Yes, they all happen to be wearing various shades of blue or teal, it was actually unintentional for once. But it might have to stay that way. Tamago is hard to color because her skin and hair are so...eggy. Ahaha I didn't do that on purpose either.

So yep. These might end up being the promos for the preview, but who knows. My computer is so sad right now. I've been running photoshop and a bunch of other things.

Looking at printing for the preview, Jubilee and Fresh Ume. Jubilee is proving harder than Fresh so that's going to be interesting.

Ume Abroad progress sketches

 

The first section of Ume Abroad is going to be taking place in Europe. These are some quick pencil and ink drawings. Older European architecture is a bear to draw, yes I happened to sketch some of the easier ones. Wait until Russia, just wait. It's a horrifying prospect really. Um. These are from Estonia and Sweden. The statue and wall piece are from St. Petersburg.

Jamie and Donovan and wolf guy

 

Jamie and Donovan for Valentine's Day, which I can post here because it's safe. For now. Also, you know. Most places on the internet. This was my last piece of this kind for a while maybe. I'm now out of watercolor paper this size. It's a nice ending to it though. Arms are for chumps.

I'm really atrocious at drawing animals. The heads get away from me. Anyways, decided on this wolf-type thing in a coat. I'm not sure why.

Things I don't care about: if you're a furry. If you're a creepy furry, you're probably just a creep. If you're a jerk, you are just a jerk. It's not because you're a furry. I dislike when people think that "furry" automatically equals "bad". Ugh. Also, then there's the fact that "furry" means "bad" and "anthro" is "kind of okay as long as ______".

Okay, this is going to get soapbox-y soon, I'm going to stop. There might be more of wolf-trenchcoat-man eventually. I like his fancy hair.

Bird again

Well this is what it's supposed to look like. I had some trouble with this and it involved a lot of fixes but I like the shape, the thicker line was something that was decided later and I'm not sure if I'm satisfied with it. I think it got away from the bird feeling. Or maybe it's a...chubby bird. One of those little fatty ones that lives on the ground. (Bird knowledge=barely any. Sea life knowledge=way too much)

Deciding on a Valentine's Day Ume comic. I think next year I'm going to do really minor holidays. Also I should find out when Bagel Day is over at the Perp. Because that's what's important in life. Bagel Day from high school.

I really want to take a pattern class, I don't think it's something that I'd be be very good at learning myself, too specific.

Triple Bird Score

Three bird drawings. Same sheet as the other recent marker things. Cut down. All blues and yellows. Except for that dark one really. Doves. Sparrows. Bluebirds. Ravens. (That last one totally NOT inspired by Howl's Moving Castle. What.)

I guess it was time for a break from sea life. These are also totally not screencaps because I hate trying to upload files from TIFS and resizing and ending up with five extra versions. My external HD will thank me later.

Marker Time

Two new marker doodles. I guess I draw ocean things a lot. 

First one is a sea...horse...It was actually going to be a regular horse, but I decided against it. More hair. Yay hair. Unfortunately because of all the hair and fabric, the lady doesn't look like she's sitting on it anymore.  Not sure what I was going for there, blues? I think that was it. The second one was a fish...and seaweed...

Marker sketches

Haven't used markers in a couple of years, when in doubt. Lady drawing. This was going to be a pre-sketch of one of the pencil drawings from before, but that didn't really happen. Now she's a sea lady- ondine- thing.

Other lady drawing, with really inaccurate impossible legs! Yeah! Didn't get around to scanning this one. The ondine has been updated though.

Progress sketches

Planning some of the new mixed media pieces I'm going to be working on. There's a lot of little notes on a bunch of these, a couple of them are going to have to be refined a bunch. Trying to work a little bigger than I have in the past, we'll see how that goes. Sketches are always so messy and full of circles and lines.

My phone takes better photos than my webcam, and if these were actually black and white, they'd look as good as my scanner. Technology is frightening.

More Free Hand Inking and Colors

Veggies!

Did this one during the last class that I've been helping in. A lot of really good work went up today. Makes me want to draw regular comics again!

I think it'd be fun to screenprint some of these ink drawings but I'd really have to refine the edges. Every time the brush gets pulled up and I adjust levels after scanning things get a little fuzzy. It became very obvious after trying to color the green part. Also have to dig around for extra ink cartridges, out of ink, lines getting progressively furrier.
